Periodontics

The periodontics is the medical-dental specialty that studies prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and conditions that affect the tissues that support the dental organs periodontium and implanted substitutes, for the maintenance of health, function and aesthetics of the teeth and their adjacent tissues.

Periodontology emerges from dentistry to support the study of scientific evidence on the state of the healthy and diseased periodontium.

The main periodontal diseases that affect a dentition are periodontitis and gingivitis.

Today with the advent of implantology, periodontics is also responsible for the prevention and treatment of peri-implant diseases such as peri-implantitis.

Periodontal disease manifests as gingivitis (inflammation and bleeding of the gums without affecting the bone) o periodontitis, where the destruction of the bone that supports the tooth occurs.

If it is not treated in time, can lead to tooth loss.

A periodontal treatment ranges from the correction of the hygiene technique to the control of bacterial plaque, until the elimination of the triggers of the same (dental stones or tartar and periodontal pockets).

The most common therapy for the treatment of periodontal disease is curettage and in more advanced cases, periodontal surgery.
